Arteries carry blood to all parts of the body from the heart. Blood pressure refers to the force with which this blood pushes against the arterial walls. With every heart beat, blood is pumped into the arteries. Blood pressure is highest (systolic pressure) when the heart beats, pumping blood. Blood pressure falls or is lowest (diastolic pressure) when the heart is at rest between each beat.

Hence, when doctors read our blood pressure, it is given using both systolic and diastolic pressure. For example, if the blood pressure of a person reads 120 / 80, the first reading is systolic pressure (120) and the second diastolic pressure (80). Blood pressure never remains static but changes depending on if a person is at rest or active. Hence, it is lowest when we are asleep and increases depending on our activities or if we get excited, stressed, nervous or afraid etc. Many people may not have normal blood pressure and they are said to be suffering from low or high blood pressure. 

Low blood pressure is called hypotension and it causes blood flow to the organs to reduce. This means that vital organs like the brain, heart, kidney etc., do not receive adequate nutrients or oxygen and hence they will not function normally and they could get damaged. When blood pressure drops to around 100 / 60, a person can be suffering from low blood pressure. 

High blood pressure (hypertension) occurs when the pressure goes to 140 / 90 or more. This means the arteries are under tension or high pressure. High blood pressure affects a large number of people. The American Heart Association states that 1 in 3 adults suffer from high blood pressure in the US. It also affects a lot of teenagers and children, which is a worrying factor. High blood pressure increases the risk of contracting heart diseases, atherosclerosis, renal disease, strokes and damage to the eye. Since so much of end-organ damage occurs due to hypertension, it is important to detect and treat this condition soon and normalize blood pressure to avoid complications.

Wheatgrass is a natural source of many vitamins and minerals like calcium, vitamins A, C, E and B12, magnesium, selenium, iron, amino acids, magnesium, chlorophyll, potassium, sulfur, phosphorus, sodium, zinc and proteins. For those who suffer from blood pressure, wheatgrass provides many benefits for it is rich in chlorophyll. The chlorophyll molecule is similar in structure to hemoglobin. This is said to possess many healing properties. Dr. Ann Wigmore credits the chlorophyll content in wheatgrass of curing the gangrene in her leg that prevented its amputation.

Wheatgrass is a vegetable and what is more, it is relatively free of sodium. Foods that contain sodium can increase blood pressure levels. In fact those with hypertension are recommended low-sodium diets.

Wheatgrass contains plenty of dietary fiber, providing 4% of an adult’s daily requirement. This can help control blood pressure. Wheatgrass also provides 13% of our daily requirement of vitamin C. This high amount of vitamin C found in wheatgrass can lower blood pressure.

Another benefit of wheatgrass is it promotes weight loss. Obesity is one major contributor to hypertension. It is easy to add wheatgrass to our daily diet – to yoghurt, smoothies, cereals or fresh juices.

Wheatgrass can also help reduce blood pressure by dilating blood vessels in the body. Blood pressure can be lowered since chlorophyll is said to work like hemoglobin and increase blood cell count. Blood can be purified and enriched since metabolism and enzyme systems are stimulated when wheatgrass is consumed.

Some patients can also experience headaches, hives, nausea or throat swelling after eating wheatgrass.
